It was a Saturday night to forget for Arizona State and those who backed the Sun Devils at Arizona sportsbooks, as they fell at home to Fresno State, 29-0.
The 29-point rout was ASU’s first shutout since losing to USC 28-0 in 2008 and its first home shutout since losing to Washington 10-0 in 1988. The loss also represented the largest margin of victory for a “Group of Five” program over a “Power Five” school since Cincinnati dominated Boston College, 38-6, in 2019. To get a sense of where the Sun Devils’ latest loss ranks historically, BetArizona.com broke down the largest margins of victory for Group of Five teams over their Power Five competitors since 2019.

ASU Joins Unenviable Company
As stated above, ASU’s 29-0 loss to Fresno State was the second largest by a P5 school to a G5 program since 2019 and the largest by a Pac-12 member — trumping Washington State’s 29-6 loss to the Bulldogs last season. Other Pac-12 losses to G5 schools that made the cut included Oregon State’s 24-13 loss to Utah State in 2021, ASU’s 27-17 loss to BYU in 2019 and Washington State’s 31-21 loss to Air Force in 2019.
Looking forward, the Sun Devils enter Pac-12 play this weekend, when they host the fifth-ranked USC Trojans in Tempe at 7:30 p.m. Oddsmakers at Caesars Sportsbook Arizona list ASU as a 34-point underdog with an over/under of 62 points.
