On the heels of the country’s fifth straight Olympic gold medal in Paris, it’s worth wondering who the next head coach will be tasked with the heavy burden and awesome opportunity that comes from leading the U.S. men’s national basketball team in Los Angeles four years from now.
This summer, Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr stepped up after his mentor, Gregg Popovich, led the U.S. to gold in Tokyo during the 2020 Games (held in 2021 due to the pandemic), while former Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski did the same three Olympics in a row, from 2008 to 2016, winning gold each time. If only Arizona sports betting had been around for each iteration.
Before that, a cavalcade of NBA head coaching royalty assumed the role, with Larry Brown, Rudy Tomjanovich, Lenny Wilkins and Chuck Daly taking turns in the coach’s seat between 1992 and 2004.
Now, it’s up to a new coach to take the torch from Kerr in 2028 when the Games return to the United States for the first time since 1996, when Wilkens led the country to gold on their home soil.
With that all in mind, BetArizona.com broke down the odds on which head coach will be the next in line for the U.S. team in 2028, with a handful of current assistant coaches under Kerr leading the way for 2028.

Our current leaders in the chase to replace Kerr in 2028 are all assistants on this year’s Olympic team, with two-time NBA champion Erik Spoelstra leading the way at -1500, followed by Tyronn Lue of the Los Angeles Clippers (+4500), Mark Few of the Gonzaga Bulldogs and Dan Hurley of the UConn Huskies (+10000 each).
Spoelstra was a first-time assistant for the U.S. team in 2024, taking on the role after serving as a head coach for the Miami Heat since 2008 and standing in line to become the first bench stalwart in franchise history to coach the Americans in the Olympics.
Lue was also a first-time assistant for the U.S. team in 2024, on the heels of serving as an NBA head coach with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Clippers from 2016 to 2024, wining the NBA Championship with LeBron James in 2016, among other coaching accolades.
Few is among the winningest active coaches in men’s college basketball, going 688-135 with the Bulldogs in 24 seasons in Spokane. Hurley is coming off of consecutive national titles in Storrs, becoming one of the hottest coaching names in the game across all levels.
All four will be among the names bandied about in coming years as possible replacements for Kerr when the Games come home to Los Angeles in 2028, with the U.S. team facing stiff competition on home soil and needing a strong leader to push them across the finish line for a sixth straight gold medal in Tinseltown.
