Opening Day is drawing closer for Arizona sportsbooks, and energy around the D-backs is arguably at all-time high following the signing of pitcher Corbin Burnes in free agency.
Utilizing BaseballReference.com, BetArizona.com developed the statistics for Burnes’ best month of the season. The statistics were averaged from the last 3 seasons including 2022, 2023 and 2024.

Month | Win % | Innings | ERA | SO/9 | BA |
March/April | .917 | 93.5 | 2.77 | 9.2 | 0.190 |
May | .417 | 106.1 | 2.52 | 9.6 | 0.215 |
June | .633 | 92.4 | 3.52 | 9.7 | 0.222 |
July | .722 | 102.1 | 2.32 | 10.3 | 0.167 |
August | .194 | 89.6 | 5.38 | 8.6 | 0.255 |
Sept./Oct. | .567 | 101.4 | 2.34 | 9.9 | 0.195 |
Looking at the stats above, it's easy to see why D-backs GM Mike Hazen gave Burnes a six-year, $210 million contract this offseason. The 2021 Cy Young Award winner has made four straight All-Star teams, lead the NL in strikeouts in 2022, and has made the All-MLB First Team twice (2021 and 2024).
Suffice to say, he's been quite strong each month of the season - particularly in March, April and July - with one exception.
The month of August has been an anomaly for Burnes, with a 5.38 ERA over nearly 90 innings in the last three seasons. This shouldn't come as a complete shock - August is the "Dog Days Month" for a reason across MLB, as the sixth month of the season takes it toll on hurlers in particular.
It's a key trend for D-backs skipper Torey Lovullo to be aware of this season however, as the D-backs just missed the postseason last year despite a strong second half. Lovullo and his staff will need to find a way to keep Burnes in tip top shape come August. Otherwise, the L.A. Dodgers will likely claim their fourth straight division title, as they are favored to do so at BetMGM Arizona.
