Despite its reputation as a desert oasis, the southwestern state of Arizona has its fair share of coniferous forests, with plenty of Christmas tree-worthy pine trees along the Madrean Sky Islands of the southern fringe of the state, along with the northern portion on or along the Colorado plateau.
That bounty of pines means that Arizonans have options when it comes to finding that perfect tree for the morning of Dec. 25, with Grand Canyon State residents either being able to opt for the real thing (thanks to the stateās extensive pine tree assortment) or choosing the artificial variety of Christmas tree this year.
Holiday season is in full swing. At BetArizona.com, we were curious if locals in the Grand Canyon State prefer real or artificial Christmas trees. Using Google Trends, we compared the search interest scores for āreal Christmas treesā and āartificial Christmas trees.ā The search period was 11/30/2023-12/25/2023 and filtered to only include Arizona.
Type | Score |
Real Tree | 9 |
Artificial Tree | 5 |
Metro | Type | Percentage of Preference |
Phoenix | Real Tree | 51% |
Tucson | Artificial Tree | 57% |

When it comes to the stateās preference when it comes to Christmas trees, it appears that Arizonans by and large prefer the real thing, with actual trees scoring a search interest total of nine points, compared with artificial trees, which finished the period in question with a score of five.
The results get a bit more skewed when broken down by Arizonaās two main metropolitan areas, with the Valley of the Sun opting for real trees over fake ones by a 51%-to-49% margin, while the Tucson area went with fake trees over actual ones by a final margin of 57%-to-43%.
Regardless of personal tree preferences, it appears that Arizonans by and large can get down with the holiday spirit, which is something to celebrate as Christmastime approaches ever closer by the day from the chilly outposts of Coconino County on down to the borderlands on the stateās southern fringe.
