How Charitable Is Arizona: Grand Canyon State Ranks High For Charity Day

Each day, it seems like more and more of the American experience is straying further from the Golden Rule of treating each other with respect, but that sentiment rings truer in certain parts of the country than others.

In states like Arizona, being kind (or charitable) seems to be a more natural expression than in other parts of the country, with the Grand Canyon State ranking among the most charitable locales in America.

International Charity Day is September 5. In the spirit of giving, BetArizona.com - home to all things Arizona sports betting - wanted to see which state was the most charitable. We pulled data from Forbes to see each state’s charitable giving rate and the number of charities per 1,000 residents along with the search interest scores for “charities to donate to,” on Google Trends between August 19, 2004 – August 19, 2024.

We then ranked the top 10 most charitable states based on a total score factoring in both the search interest scores, number of charities per capita, and giving rate.

Arizona Among Most Charitable States in America

Nationally, Arizona’s charity score of 121 points ranked second overall, behind national leader New York (132 total score) and ahead of places like New Jersey (119 total points), Massachusetts (114 points) and California (112 points).

Interestingly, no Southern states made the cut this year, with the rest of the national charity leaderboard including places like Maryland (111 points), New Hampshire (109 points), Nevada and Vermont (107 points each) and Wisconsin (104 points).

Still, when it comes to charity and treating others well, it seems like the Grand Canyon State is in a class of its own, with Arizona posting the second highest score when it comes to topics surrounding that Golden Rule mentality in 2024.
